Green Oak Ranch sits on 142 lush acres between Vista and Carlsbad, California. Not only one of the most untouched areas of native California land, it was also a historic stop on the original Butterfield Overland Stage mail route. The mail stop was originally built in 1858 and still exists on the property today.
In the 1940s, the land was purchased by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and became a Christian-based boys ranch that remained open into the 1950s. The original ranch remains pristine and gazing across this landscape, it appears nearly the same as it did 100 years ago with the stage stop, dirt roads, meadows and lakes.
In the 1940s, twenty bunkhouses were built, and to the modest buildings an olympic sized swimming pool and a cafeteria-style restaurant were added. Today, Green Oak Ranch is a year-round host camp and also serves as a Christian-based sober living experience to help individuals make a path to sobriety in a work therapy environment.
Featured next to the original stage stop, the Butterfield Overland Stage mural was commissioned in November 2014 to highlight a hidden, historic San Diego location and visually revive the memory of the Butterfield Overland Stage.
